buyer's agent
An agent who represents the person buying a property and advises on search, price and negotiation.
Definition
A buyer's agent works for the purchaser, helping define needs, find suitable homes, check comparable prices and negotiate. Depending on the country, the buyer may pay the agent directly, or the fee may come from the seller's side of the transaction. The arrangement should be written down. Because the agent has a duty to the buyer, they can discuss strengths and weaknesses of a property and a sensible offer level in ways that a seller's agent cannot. Ask for the fee arrangement before you start searching, so you know whether and when you may owe a payment.
In a sentence
The buyer's agent compared recent sales before the offer.
They agreed the buyer's agent fee in writing.
Common mix-up
Written fee terms vary by market; always check who pays whom.
